Elementary Education Advising Timeline

  • Review the following general planning information to ensure you are making timely progress toward your degree completion. Use the planning resources available on this webpage (i.e. checksheet, planning form, example 4-year plan) under Forms & Resources
  • Review your checksheet and use the academic planning form to begin a plan of study. It is expected that you will already be familiar with some of the courses and a potential schedule prior to advising appointments. However, your advisor will answer any questions you have, clarify requirements, and make suggestions to help you complete your academic plan.

Admission to Teacher Education:

Students should begin to plan for admission to RCOE during their freshman year. Most importantly, we recommend students complete the Praxis 1 (unless you are exempt) during the freshman year or early in your studies.  You should plan to complete all requirements and apply by the end of the first semester of your sophomore year. This means you need to begin early! Please review a detailed description of the Teacher Education admission requirements.  Keep in mind that the final step for admission is the completion of a background check through the RCOE Dean’s Office. The contact person is Ms. Jean Edwards at edwardsjk@appstate.edu

Each Semester:

  1. Make an appointment with the elementary education program advisor at: http://www.supersaas.com/schedule/galvin/advising. Detailed instructions on how to schedule an appointment are on the Forms and Resources page under Advising Appointment Instructions.
  2. It is RCOE policy that you meet with your advisor prior to registration; otherwise, you will not be able to register. Feel free to meet with your advisor early in the semester to avoid the later “rush” and stress that occurs just prior to registration. Also, your advisor will be able to spend more time assisting you with your schedule and overall goals.
  3. Keep track of your own checksheet! Remember that it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you have completed all requirements for graduation. Your academic advisor’s role is to be a guide and support but not do the work for you!
  4. For more information on how to prepare for your advising appointment, visit the Responsibilities page.
  5. Become very familiar with the Registrar’s Office webpage: www.registrar.appstate.edu. Check out the calendar tab at the top of the page and look for important dates and deadlines. Anything you need to know about registration and courses can typically be found on the registrar website, or contact their office at 262-2050.

Prior to Block 1 and Block 2:

1. Review the following Power Point Presentations:

2. Attend the appropriate orientation one semester before you begin your Block sequence. These orientations will be announced extensively through email and flyers.

3. Review the Courses you must take in Block I and Block II.

One year before Student Teaching:

   1. Complete the Student Teaching Application online.

   2. Verify your Criminal Background Check is up to date. (Information regarding this is listed on the Forms and Resources page  under Criminal Background Requirement and Procedures.)

   3. Request a Graduation audit of your coursework with the RCOE Dean’s Office (4th Floor COE Building).

   4. Sign up for your TB test and have it read at the M.S. Shook Student Health Services on campus.

   5. Attend all student teaching planning meetings (typically the month before you are to student teach).

Before Graduation:

    1. Complete the Praxis II Test #5015, which is required to both graduate and become licensed to teach in NCYou will need a score of 161 to pass. We recommend you take Praxis II toward the end of Block 2 but before student teaching. Please see more information regarding Praxis II on the Testing page.

   2. Ensure you have completed the graduation audit through the Dean’s Office.
